NETWORKING OPERATING SYSTEM (NOS) BASED ON SIMULATION MULTIMEDIA

Network operating system is an operating system that can assist with network issues.

Masfelixer - Network operating system is an operating system that can assist with network issues. In theory, this network operating system is divided into various services that function to serve users. These services include file sharing, shared printer usage, DNS service, HTTP service, and other services. The term network operating system became known in the decades from 1980 to 1990.

The development of networks in Indonesia demands knowledge about network management and the built network operating system. According to Tribun Batam, the number of internet users in the country reached 88.1 million or 34.9% of the total 252.4 million Indonesian population in 2015 [1]. As Indonesian citizens, it is not enough to only be users of the network; we should also know how to further advance the development of the network. Many Indonesian citizens are consumers and reliant on the network, as it has become an essential need nowadays. However, their ability to develop and configure networks themselves is not on par, and they rely on services from various technicians.

Based on these issues, this research focuses on network operating system configuration. The network operating system serves as a control center for network resources, providing secure network access, and managing user connections to the network. Therefore, the author conducts research on the development of a multimedia-based simulation for learning network operating systems.

With this application, it is expected to become more interesting in learning about networking operating systems. The outcome of this research is a Multimedia Simulation-based Networking Operating System (NOS).

Operating systems are broadly divided into two categories: open source and closed source. The term "open source" means that the program's code is made accessible and can be studied by the general public. It can be edited, developed, and distributed later on. If a developer prohibits others from distributing it, then the operating system is no longer open source but closed source.

In contrast, closed source operating systems are highly proprietary, meaning that others cannot develop this operating system. If users or the general public want to develop this operating system, they must contact the developer of an open-source operating system. Some examples of open-source operating systems include Windows operating systems.

A network operating system is an operating system that can help with networking issues. In theory, this network operating system is divided into various services that serve users. Figure 1 illustrates an overview of a network operating system. These services include file sharing, shared printer usage, DNS services, HTTP services, and other services. The term "network operating system" began to be known in the decade between 1980 and 1990.

Various network operating systems include the following:

a. Microsoft LAN Manager

Microsoft Corporation, together with 3Com Corporation, developed a network operating system. The LAN Manager was designed to develop network server software running on the MS-DOS operating system. The final version of LAN Manager, version 2.2, was implemented into OS/2 1.31, becoming the Microsoft server operating system. This version was later replaced by Windows NT Server in 1994 [4].

b. Novell NetWare

Novell NetWare is a network operating system implemented on IBM computers. Novell is the developer of NetWare. This operating system is based on the Xerox XNS network protocol stack.

c. Microsoft Windows NT Server

The Windows NT operating system was created with several different editions. This product is built on a common source code, including Windows NT Workstation, specifically designed for networked workstation computers.
d. Banyan VINES

Banyan VINES (Virtual Integrated Network Service) was a popular network operating system in the 1980s and 1990s. Many companies implemented this network operating system.

The first related research was conducted by a researcher named Satriedi. In his journal on the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) exploitation applied to Windows operating systems, he highlighted some weaknesses of the RPC system, which were exploited by hackers/crackers. RPC is a protocol for communicating between processes, allowing programs to run on a computer without executing code on the remote system. However, these weaknesses were leveraged by hackers/crackers to execute code with local system administrator privileges on infected systems.

Through the second research revealed by a Muslim in his journal, it explains the use of Linux operating systems that can be used for gaming. Among several distros like Linux Mint, Klikit, Kubuntu, and others used for general purposes, there is one Linux distro specifically designed for gaming applications. This need is what causes users to migrate from Windows operating systems to Linux. The objective of this research is to create a new Linux distro that can support games, both Linux-based games and Windows games. With this objective, it is expected that game users accustomed to playing Windows-based games will not worry about playing games on the Linux platform. This new operating system distro is named "Semutireng 1.0" based on Ubuntu. The operating system is processed using the help of the application Remastersys on Ubuntu distro.

The third related research is taken from a national seminar conducted by a student named Abdul Khafid. In his research, he explains a pilgrimage pilgrimage activity packaged in multimedia. Therefore, in this research, the Hajj pilgrimage learning material that was previously in text form is transformed into multimedia format. With this multimedia-based Hajj pilgrimage, the material, prayers, and simulation for the rituals of Hajj become more interactive and engaging.
